Briana Blasko’s photography has been featured in educational programming by MAP Academy (Museum of Art & Photography Academy, Bengaluru), where her images support teaching on Indian art, textiles, and cultural practice.

This presentation is an intimate photographic journey exploring the sacred, centuries-old dialogue between handwoven textiles and traditional movement practices across India. Based on Blasko’s extensive fieldwork and her book Dance of the Weave, the talk illuminates:

  • Tactile Choreographies: The profound relationship between dancers and their costumes, where textiles are not mere adornment but “co-performers” that shape the body’s silhouette and help narrate the story.

  • Woven Narratives: The visual artistry of textiles, from the rhythm of the loom to the vibrant colors of silk sarees and cotton dhotis, and how they are brought to life through the fluid movements of classical dance and martial arts.

  • Artistry and Labor: The dedicated, labor-intensive processes behind the fabrics themselves, from the synchronized gestures of indigo dyers to the patient, meditative work inside a weaver’s studio.

Her photographs featured in MAP Academy’s Indian Textiles: Histories, Practices, Perspectives series highlight how the material culture of weaving and the ephemeral art of dance are inextricably linked in South Asian tradition.

Blasko’s work continues to contribute to vital conversations at the intersection of craft, embodiment, and cultural memory.
